Advanced Production: Video
Carrying
out a Recce
Good preparation is essential for effective media
production, and before any video work takes place on location a production
company will undertake a series of recces (reconnaissance). In a recce you should thoroughly examine and
check the location (s) you intend to use.
This will include checks on electrical power sources, on access for
people and equipment and on health and safety generally. The crew will also want to select a location
which is appropriate in terms of its “look” and relevance to the story. The crew can then begin to build the
constraints created by the location into the production schedule.
After completing the recce you will need to draw a
rough sketch of the areas you are going to use to give a better idea of where
to put the camera and position the actor when filming.
You should also include in the sketch access
points (if appropriate), and power points.
Identify in your sketch any potential risks or hazards to health and
safety.
